Tourism grows with a focus on sustainable development

Tourism in Portugal continues to assert itself as one of the most significant engines of the national economy, combining vitality, a diverse offer and international appeal. According to Travel BI by Turismo de Portugal, the most recent figures confirm this trend: in July 2025, tourist accommodation establishments received 3.4 million guests, representing growth of 4.3% on the same month last year, and recorded 9.4 million overnight stays, up 3.5% year on year. Between January and July, 45.8 million overnight stays were recorded, a rise of 2.7% on 2024. These results consolidate the sector as one of the main pillars of the economy, not only for its direct impact but also for its ability to stimulate other complementary activities.

However, the challenges ahead require this growth to be balanced and responsible. The tourism of tomorrow is not built on more visitors alone, but on a strategic vision that integrates environmental sustainability, the valorisation of cultural heritage and social cohesion. Regenerating territories, backing sustainable mobility solutions, including local communities and encouraging social innovation are increasingly decisive dimensions in ensuring the sector's benefits reach the whole country and that tourism development does not compromise resources essential to future generations.

It is in this context that the programme “Grow with Tourism” arises, promoted by Turismo de Portugal, designed to support projects that combine innovation, sustainability and social impact. With a total budget of €30 million, split between grants and a repayable financing facility, this initiative represents a unique opportunity for companies, public bodies and non-profit organisations to develop projects capable of strengthening the sector's competitiveness while generating lasting value for communities.

At a moment when the indicators confirm the good health of Portuguese tourism, it becomes essential to use this momentum to consolidate a more sustainable, inclusive and resilient growth model. The sector's future depends on how well we can turn economic results into social and environmental benefits, ensuring tourism continues to be a genuine engine of territorial development.
