Village Condominium: Tâmega e Sousa

The main aim of this Village Condominium is to create 14 village condominiums, working chiefly on landscape conversion so as to lower the risk of rural wildfire and support biodiversity and territorial resilience.

With rural wildfire hazard rated “High” or “Very High” around the built-up area of virtually every village, intervention at the identified sites is urgent. The project was therefore structured around 5 objectives:

• Complete removal of forest biomass;

• Higher CO2 retention through native broadleaf species;

• Revitalising farming and silvopastoral activity, with environmental, social and economic impact across the territory;

• Enhancing the villages from a landscape point of view;

• Greater safety and comfort for residents, as land that was abandoned and poorly managed comes under more sustainable management and planning.
