Operational Group for the Valorisation of Cherry Production

This project focused on the cherry sub-sector, and in particular on innovation in the production process, since its aim is to improve and upgrade production processes in the sub-sector by encouraging growers to adopt new methods and technologies.

The average yield of Portugal's cherry orchards (2.6 t/ha) falls short of the figures achieved in other European countries, such as Italy (3.4 t/ha), Germany (4.1 t/ha) and France (4.2 t/ha). Although cherries account for little of total fresh fruit production on the mainland — under 2% — they represent a significant income for growers, especially those in economically and socially depressed regions with no alternative crops or economic activities. Well valued in the market, cherry production helps sustain employment levels and retain a population that would otherwise move away.
