In the municipality of Mondim de Basto, the primary sector has been gaining scale, representing approximately 40% of the economic activity of companies based in the territory. Given this economic dynamic, the Municipality has been delivering a range of actions aimed at creating sustainable solutions that favour the local economy, by creating conditions for marketing products and services based on its endogenous resources. The Mondim de Basto Rural Market is one such example. It started 3 years ago and takes place fortnightly, on Fridays, in the Town Square.

Many consumers are already in the habit of buying produce when it is held; however, conditions need to be created so that all actors in society take part in selling and buying local produce. To this end, the Municipality will carry out a set of promotion and awareness actions aimed at improving the operating conditions of the current Rural Market, increasing demand for products originating in the territory of Mondim de Basto, promoting association among local producers and encouraging local economic operators to buy agricultural and processed products originating in Mondim de Basto.

These actions form part of the project “Mondim de Basto Rural Market”, promoted by the Municipality of Mondim de Basto, which will run 12 promotion/awareness actions in 2019 and 2020. The project is co-funded by PDR 2020, LEADER, Portugal 2020 and the European Union, through the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
