Government Approves the National Programme for Territorial Cohesion
Developed by the Mission Unit for the Development of the Interior and proposed by the Deputy Minister, Eduardo Cabrita, the Programme rests on five pillars aimed at making the interior more cohesive, competitive, sustainable, connected and collaborative.
«Developing this territory, which lies closer to the European markets, is a Government priority. This Programme was drawn up in step and in dialogue with local authorities and other local partners, such as the universities», said Eduardo Cabrita at a press conference following the Council of Ministers meeting in Lisbon.
The Minister stressed that the Government Programme «identifies the development of the territory as a political priority, as a cross-cutting dimension in which the interior is seen as a space of opportunity, of competitiveness, of territorial cohesion».
«Rejects a fatalistic, welfare-based view»
The National Programme for Territorial Cohesion promotes the use and development of the resources and the particular conditions of the territory and of the border regions, as drivers of development and competitiveness.
«It has a deep dimension that looks to the future and rejects a fatalistic, welfare-based view of the interior», added Eduardo Cabrita.
The measures aim to attract and retain people in these regions, stimulate economic activity and employment, and support cross-border cooperation and knowledge exchange, enabling new strategies for developing resources and greater competitiveness.
The Deputy Minister also said that this is a programme in action, and one that does not end with its publication in the official gazette.
«From now on, the mission of the Mission Unit for the Development of the Interior will be to follow the 164 measures, develop a strategic dimension around these pillars and report every six months on the delivery of the plan, the development of new measures and the refinement of those in the initial programme».
Every six months, the Council of Ministers will assess this Programme against its targets and its delivery timetable.
